Mike Holland, local coordinator of the statewide "Big Sweep" campaign, snapped this photo during this year's project which netted nearly six 30 foot long dumpsters from primarily the Haw River. Tires, metal drums, water heaters and scrap lumber were part of the debris picked up by 657 volunteers. This number was up from the 150 volunteers in 1999. In addition to volunteers three prison crews from Danville Va assisted in removing cars from Back Creek along the Great Alamance Creek at Bellmont. Cleanup sites included Altamahaw, Reedy Fork at Ossipee, Little Alamance Creek in Burlington City Park, Goat Island at Sellars Mill Rd, the town of Haw River, Back Crek, Snouffer's Lake and Bowden Creek. Since the annual effort began in 1987 a total of 130,426 volunteers have covered 8792 miles of rivers collecting 2254 tons of debris. |
