Dinner

Dear site coordinators, school representatives, team leaders, as well as Corporate and Municipal/Government Sponsors of the Alamance Waterway Cleanup and Competition put on by the Alamance Chapter of NC Big Sweep and the supporters of the Haw River Trail. Please be our guests at our planning dinner August 27, 2001, 6:30 at Nick's Cuisine, in Burlington. (details below) Please help us congratulate Tracey Grajzar, First Place in last years competition. She won $21,000 in prizes and cash for bringing out 101 students from Graham Middle School. If you are a corporate or government supporter/sponsor, we would kindly ask that you insert the following PSA into your company newsletter or appropriate outlet to the widest audience, in order to increase volunteers, this year. "NC Big Sweep Alamance County Waterway Clean-up and Competition Join us September 15, 2001, from 9 till noon as we clean up the Haw River. Individuals welcome or build a team and compete for prizes. Last year's first place winner won $21,000 in prizes and cash. Meet State Senator&Representatives, County Commissioners, students from 14 Alamance Schools. Take free ride on the Haw River on one of 6 Rescue Air-boats provided by US Service Command. Join us in thanking Premiere sponsors Glen Raven and Carolina Biological. Also join us at 2pm the same day for the Haw River Celebrity Paddle. Go to our web site at Burlingtoncybermall.com/KayakAlamance.htm for details on this paddling fundraiser. Call 336-376-9322 or e-mail dr_mike@mindspring.com for details. School and education groups please call before August 27 and join us for free planning dinner at Nick's Cuisine." At the Planning meeting we will distribute supplies (gloves, first aid kits, data sheets, etc), brochures, prizes, public service announcements, etc. and go over individual assignments, so that we are all aware of each others responsibilities; In this way, should someone have to bow out, another could take up the slack without resorting to general panic and mayhem... ok, maybe just a little touch of mayhem. We will also discuss the Haw River Celebrity Paddle scheduled for 2-5pm that same day (Starts in Saxapahaw at Community Center, must pre-register: fundraiser for the Haw River Trail, but open to public, if you pick up trash along the way. Boats and guide available at cost for those who preregister). Please RSVP by August 21 and let us know how many family members (co-workers and possibly total strangers) you will be bringing. Dinner will be sort-of off the menu (to save valuable donated funds), and certainly not buffet: by this we mean we give you a choice of Chicken, Steak, or Vegetarian plates and you get an open bar. (see directions to Nick's below). Please include in the RSVP which task you would like to work on this year so we can assign sites before the meeting. Please identify and bring to this dinner 1 extra person to serve as a site coordinator for the day of the Big Sweep, or a person to act as a school representative, or a person to bring a team, or a person who represents a company that might sponsor our cleanup competition. Your help in bringing in that one extra person could double our 14 site coordinators to 28 and make the job of safely getting 600 kids into the water that much easier. Please RSVP to me the number in their party and their name and contact information before the dinner so that we can get them an information packet ready, depending on how they want to serve. Your help in this will be very important and I appreciate the time and energy it takes to identify determined and motivated volunteers to do these important jobs.
