Location of class 2 waters
Home Northeast Burlington
Several good rapids are located between the Hwy 62 bridge in north Burlington and the City of Haw River.  These vary with stream flow naturally.  We have found the best conditions are at 3 to 5 feet for newer paddlers.  As the water rises above 5 feet the speed of the water requires one to have some experience.  Between 2 and 2.5 feet this area becomes difficult to pass without dragging on many rocks.

Put in west of the Hwy 62 bridge north of Burlington at Glencoe.  The first 3 rapids are best if approached on the right.  Once you see the old Carolina Mill (old large brick building on the left) you can stay left and take a fun rapid which is best above 3.5 feet or you can go right at the large stump and in 100 yards there is a small waterfall which can be lots of fun.  See Pictures.  It is possible to take the rapids to the left and then cut back to the right to get to the falls which can be climbed and re-run fairly easily if the stream flow is not too rapid.  Otherwise you may go over the fall backwards.  On the fall there are two best tracks.  At water levels from 2.5 to 5 feet take a spot about two thirds across the river from the left, about 8 feet to the left of the primary rocks in the middle of the fall.  This spots avoids dragging on rocks and allows the front of your boat to submerge briefly.  At water levels above 4 feet there is a good track to the left of the rocks in the center of the fall.  Above 5 feet I prefer to miss the waterfall and go left around the island for some rapids that are impassible at 3 feet.  Once you are past this area the next rapid is best taken to the left.  This one is long and will rock your boat more than you might expect.  This one is best at 3.5 to 5 feet.  Above that it smoothes out somewhat.  Starting at Copland Fabrics is the "rock garden" which is a long area, 100 yards, with many rocks.  There are several good tracks through this area.  About a quarter mile past the rock garden is Goat Island.  I usually go right for several rapids, the old iron bridge, and a chute beyond the bridge.  Beyond this area are several good rapids the most notable being just above the Cone Mills plant at the City of Haw River.  Take this to the left.  There is a steep out-take spot here to the left before the bridge or you can take the flat water to the Graham out-take area about 1.5 miles downstream.

Graham and south
From the Graham out-take area there are several small rapids in the first half mile but this run is primarily flat water to the backup from the dams at Swepsonville and Saxapahaw.

Bynum
Good rapids in this area - to be added soon.
