Help us raise funds and awareness to promote the “Nealy Approved” Haw River Trail. Livery available thru Rock Rest Adventure for non-profits wishing to raise funds (10% tithe to the Trail. Boats and guide service supplied at cost by livery). Safety boat teams and first-aid stations graciously provided by the US Service Command. The event is open to recreational boaters with their own boats. The NC Big Sweep requires that participants collect trash from the river along the trip to qualify for insurance coverage of the paddle. Everglades-style Airboats (fan boats with 5’ propellers) will be giving free tours on the river from 12-2pm. Free breakfast 7:30-8:15, at Community Center. The public is invited to join a 5 mile paddle on Class I-II (family level) rapids of the Haw River, and help raise funds and awareness to promote the "Nealy Approved" Haw River Trail, as we celebrate the memory of one the 20th Century’s great boatmen.The Paddle will be held September 15, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m., putting in at Saxapahaw, and running the Haw to the Greensboro Highway bridge. Pre-registration will be required to take advantage of livery services, available through Rock Rest Adventures. Participating non-profits wishing to raise funds during this event will give a 10% tithe to the Trail, and receive boats and guide service supplied at cost. Recreational boaters, with their own boats and shuttle, are encouraged to join in this celebration. The Paddle will cap off a full day of events beginning with a free breakfast, courtesy of Biscuitville, to be held at 7:30 a.m. at the Saxapahaw Community Center. Breakfast will be followed by the annual statewide trash pick-up. In Alamance County, over 600 volunteers will remove trash at 14 sites along the Haw River and its tributaries from 9:00 a.m. to noon. From noon to 2:00 p.m. the U.S. Service Command will be offering free tours on the river in everglades-style fanboats. Safety boat teams and first-aid stations will also be provided courtesy of the U.S. Service Command. Commenting on the plans for the Paddle, Michael Holland, Ph.D., director of the NC Big Sweep in Alamance County, said, "We are proud to paddle in memory of William. His spirit of adventure-based learning will continue to guide the development of the trail which he helped inaugurate." NC Big Sweep is a non-profit with 2 major efforts; year-round environmental education and a hands-on waterway clean-up, the third Saturday of September each year. In Alamance County, Big Sweep teams clean up 14 sites along the Haw River and its major tributaries. Teams from local schools and groups are invited to compete for a variety of prizes including cash, microscopes, science supplies and backpacks.
