News Release August 21, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact :Dr. Michael Holland, NC Big Sweep, at 336.376.9322 or dr_mike@mindspring.com NC Big Sweep Of Alamance County Secures Local Support Local Organizations Commit To Support Environmental Efforts In Alamance County Saxapahaw, North Carolina, August 21, 2001 -- NC Big Sweep Alamance County Waterway Clean-up and School Competition , announced today the receipt of two grants, donation of web site design and hosting, and commitment of several local corporate sponsors. In addition to supporting the hands-on waterway clean-up planned for September 15, these contributions will further the goal of a year-round environmental outreach program in Alamance County. This includes further development of the William Neally Memorial Haw River Trail.NC Big Sweep received confirmation that a $2,000 grant was awarded by the Alamance/ Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau. The grant will be used to produce a brochure for The Trail to increase public awareness and access. An additional $500 grant was received from the Burlington Jr. Women's Club. This grant will be used to commission a 2-person kayak for The Trail. The boat will housed at Trail Headquarters in Saxapahaw, and made available to participating non-profits and school groups. Corporate and private sponsors have also stepped up to the plate. Glen Raven Inc., Carolina Biological, Biscuitville, William Powell, Pro Canoe & Kayak, BioQuest Environmental Education, Brain Train, Jordan Properties, Tom Powell & Assoc. and Waste Industries, all former sponsors, have once again committed valuable resources to make this year’s clean-up effort a success. Internet provider, NetPath.Net, has offered to host a complimentary website, which will be designed and maintained, pro bono, by Webs by Vic t m. The site, www.HawRiverTrail.org, will provide up-to-date information about the William Neally Memorial Haw River Trail, as well as related environmental programs in Alamance County.Commenting on the outpouring of donations, Michael Holland, Ph.D., director of the NC Big Sweep in Alamance County, said, "We are very proud and appreciative of the level of support shown by public, private and non-profit groups and individuals here in Alamance County. For the Big Sweep to be a success, there must be a community-wide effort. With the publicity and prizes that this type of support generates, we are guaranteed that the clean-up, on September 15, will beat our previous record of 600 volunteers." NC Big Sweep is a non-profit with 2 major efforts; year-round environmental education and a hands-on waterway clean-up, the third Saturday of September each year. In Alamance County, Big Sweep teams clean up 14 sites along the Haw River and its major tributaries. Teams from local schools and groups are invited to compete for a variety of prizes including cash, microscopes, science supplies and backpacks. #### |
